Great to greater?

An inspiring idea. With an amazing return.

This is what my coaching practice is all about.

Starting from great – and moving to greater.  Raising the game – realizing potential.

Closing the gap between your reality and your vision.

My clients are great people and great companies –

just like you.

Great People

Great people like you — people who have felt lit up by their work – competent, connected, motivated, impactful, fulfilled.  And are struggling to find that high energy feeling right now.

Great Companies

Great Companies like yours — a workplace that deeply understands the power of a great team, and wants to foster growth and development at all levels. Yet struggles to do so.
“Karyn is the single most valuable personal and professional expense that I had this past year. The mix of probing questions and her knowledge of business really was the perfect cocktail of what I needed.  If you have a list of things you want to work through, or just want to be challenged to look at things differently, constantly striving to be the best “you”, talk with Karyn.”

                                                       Laci Hernandez, CSC, Co-Founder, BuckinghamSearch

Coaching is a new approach to an old problem

People hit roadblocks in their worklife (maybe even you?).  And, when it happens, others offer up traditional solutions –

mentoring, training,, working to fit a round peg into a square hole.

What if there was another option to clear the hurdles, get unstuck and realize the desired results?

My approach is your new choice.

I believe that the answer is right in front of us all, actually inside of us, if we just make space to hear it. Pausing, really listening, and thinking creatively. Clearing that space opens up possibility and opportunity. Converting that to action and accountability is the deliverable.
Coaching is a partnership to move people and organizations from great to greater; client and coach work together. A great coach knows how to prompt discovery, challenge growth, and invite forward movement. Great clients are ready and motivated to take action on whatever is standing in the way of their potential.
Coaching techniques help individuals tap into their own awesomeness, and then buy-in to action and accountability. When you have that forward movement, the rest follows: engagement, productivity, the flow of great work getting done in great ways.
“Karyn has fundamentally changed the way I think about the very concepts of challenge and strategy. My work with Karyn hasn’t just assisted me in troubleshooting or planning, it’s given me a deeper, more finely honed set of internal resources to call on whenever I’m doing either, and it’s altered the actual lens through which I view those parts of being the leader of both my own company and my own life.”

Working Together

As a professional development coach, whether I am working directly with individuals or coordinating company-wide initiatives with business leaders, the objective is the same – raise the game – realize potential.  Using development conversations and training workshops, I am shooting for that high energy feeling and the resulting success.

We spend more time at work than anywhere else.  I am passionate about having that be time well spent.

Nice to meet you.

Professional Development Coach

These bios are always funny because we write about ourselves in the third person and try to make it clear that we are competent, reliable, solid professionals.  So by the time we wordsmith all the paragraphs, we are left with a bio that can lack a little humanity.   Here’s my attempt to close that gap.

All the chronology, certifications, degrees are covered in the Official version. My professional journey has range.  What I mean is that I’ve worn a lot of hats in a lot of different settings, industries, and geographies.  Big company politics and small start-up growing pains are all familiar territory.  It’s like a giant toolbox that I can draw from.

I’ve had some unconventional moments in my journey.  Like when my husband and I seized an opportunity for him to teach in France, and packed up to live there for four years with our baby girl.  No working visa for me, and I learned to take a more holistic view of my professional identity: embracing motherhood, language and cultural integration, and lots of solo time.

That special time really opened the door to more unconventional moves like pulling an ad off of a tree to find my next big role.  What started as a random job posting became the soulful adventure of growing a start-up from a few college kids to an award-winning workplace.

After over a decade, that seat started to feel maybe too familiar – and there was a new voice in my head asking, ‘what else?, what now?’ and importantly, ‘why not?!’.  Using a lot of the techniques that I use with client’s today, I stepped out of my comfort zone, asked my fears to take the back seat and launched my practice. Eyes forward.

Grateful every day for this decision as this work brings me immense joy. My work is guided by brain and heart, each whispering in my ear.  And, my intuition is powerful which is great for my clients.   I have an ability to hover at 30,000 feet and see the connecting thread in a broader discussion or initiative. It serves me well.  People tell me that I make them feel safe – and encouraged to grow.

I value space and time – which is one of the reasons I love coaching.  The process gives people permission to slow down and hear their own great thoughts.  And in a world that moves faster and faster, coaching feels like a gift.

Chicago is home with my husband – how lucky to see skyscrapers, green parkways and a lake as big as an ocean out our windows.  If you don’t know Chicago, put it on your list!  The pandemic brought our daughter home with us – a gift to us for sure, and now she’s back out launching in much the same way as all of you are doing throughout the world at this time.

Building on over 20 years of professional experience, I launched my coaching practice in 2016.  Immediately prior, I was the SVP, Team Resources for the nationwide audio-visual and technology company, Meeting Tomorrow.  During my 11 year tenure, I partnered with the CEO in all stages of this startup company’s growth and development, always leading with a people-first strategy.  The result is an organization that hums with the energy of engaged, committed, and dynamic team members; all contributing to a profitable sustainable business success story.

I’m especially proud that the company has been honored as a Top Employer in the Events Industry (nationwide) and a Top 50 Millenial Employer (Chicago). My work there included all the essential HR responsibilities, including developing performance management systems, compensation structures,  personal and professional training and development programs, and strategies to ensure organizational health, employee engagement and talent retention.

Prior to working at Meeting Tomorrow, I worked in healthcare administration, driving systems change in service delivery and financing for the Medicare population.  And, subsequently, went on the adventure of a lifetime moving with my then young family to Versailles, France for a four-year stint.

I hold a M.H.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a B.A from the University of Pennsylvania.

Certifications:

  • Professional Certified Coach (PCC), International Coaching Federation
  • Senior Professional in HR (SPHR and SHRM-SCP)
  • Everything DiSC Authorized Partner
  • Master Practitioner of the Energy Leadership Index assessment (ELI-MP)
  • iPEC Certified Professional Coach (CPC)
My work with Karyn has been transformative for my personal and professional growth as an executive. Karyn’s unique approach does not separate the personal from professional – she coaches the “whole you”. Without her work, I would have not made the brave and life-changing decisions that I made in my life and would not [be] the professional that I am today.
I was also lucky to engage Karyn at my workplace to run leadership workshops for all managers and executives. As a participant of those workshops, I can confidently say that Karyn’s transformational work created an unbelievably strong bond, a bond that made it possible for our executive team to go through any challenges and come out as a cohesive team.
