All this writing about cake has made me hungry. You? Here’s an easy recipe for a basic French chocolate cake – the kind my friend, Marie Dominique, used to make for the kids ‘gouter’ (French snack time) when we lived in Versailles. It’s not too sweet and not fancy – a great base cake. Perfect to build on; just like all of us.

Gateau au Chocolat pour Enfants

Chocolate Cake for Kids (and grownups!)

Melt 200 g chocolat noir in a bain-marie, then add 125 g butter.

Stir to melt and mix. Take off the heat to cool slightly.

In a large mixing bowl, mix 4 eggs, 150 g sugar, 100 g flour & 1 packet of Levure Chimique (2 t baking powder)

Add the melted chocolate mixture to the ingredients in the large mixing bowl and mix well.

Put in greased round cake pan and cook for 25 mins at 375 degrees.

Let cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar, eat large slices – maybe even with your hands!

Bon Appetit!
