It gets dark so early these days, as we approach the Winter Solstice. Can make me feel a little tired. And then I drive down Lake Shore Drive in Chicago and the twinkly lights of the highrises look so pretty. It’s so beautiful that I forget that it’s cold and that I felt tired. All of this got me thinking about the power of that glow.

The first time I remember actually witnessing the glow emanating from people was when I held my first retreat in the south of France. Each person there was so clearly a sparkly ball of light – individually bright and then coming together to make something magical.

When I got back to Chicago, I started looking around for the light. Adding intention to this new observation. And, to my delight, in much the same way that Google knows that I want to buy new boots and sends me ads constantly – I found the glowing light everywhere. And I noticed it in me.  Which leads me to you…

There is a magical ball of light in you. You are part of the EVERYWHERE. Your ball of light is constantly changing. It glows, grows, wanes, flickers, falters, burns bright – always shifting.

Have I caught you off guard? Have I wandered too far from professional development? I think not. Let me show you what I mean…..

Do me a favor, finish reading this paragraph and then get real still, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths – the rest of the words will be here when you get back, so don’t panic. Set aside your critic voice, and play with me for a minute. When you are still and quiet, see if you can feel the ball of light – a flicker? A glow? Burning bright or simply embers –  I believe that it is always there.

This magical ball of light is a tremendous resource. A gift in many and varied ways. To name a few: it lights your path ** calls out and invites in others ** warms ** inspires ** creates safety ** illuminates discoveries and possibilities ** plays with and blends with other lights ** fuels  ** restores ** soothes and calms ** burns with curiosity ** clarifies insight.

As you go forward into the New Year, hold this light gently. Hold you lightly. Let the magical ball of light do its thing. Give it space and air and support. Give you space and air and support. Celebrate its movement and encourage its glow. Some questions to consider:

When have you felt this light recently – in you or in someone else?

What was happening for you at that time?

How might you see it in you now?

In this busy and bright season, keep your eyes peeled for this light in all the people you meet – and in you. Mostly keep your heart attuned to this light.

On ne voit bien qu’avec le Coeur, l’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.

One sees clearly only with the heart; the essential is invisible to the eye.
